Best Weekend Ever 7.1.04

Featuring the Wassily Chair, Manhattan Island Swim, and Spider-Man 2

Thank heavens for this Holiday. Now you don’t have to scheme for that sick day.

INDULGE
With more time home this weekend, we recommend an upgrade to your space. Live large with Marcel Breuer’s masterpiece, the Wassily Chair. Originally designed in 1925 (wow!) for a fellow artist, this chair combines killer looks and was the first tubular-steel chair ever constructed. Available at Design Within Reach, dwr.com.

CONSIDER
Before you cruise over to your regular Thursday night spot, detour to Virgin Records at Union Square for a comped performance by Ben Jelen. He’s, like, hot right now, so make a date out of it.

Right about now, Winter is a bad memory. That’s why you’ll want to visit The North Face for their summer sale. Get the gear that you’ll need in October, on sale, at their Upper West location, Broadway + 73rd Street, 212/362-1000. From July 1 - July 18.

Nothing refreshes like a nice cold… swim. And that’s why true extreme athletes will be swimming across the filthy, sometimes cold, sometimes choppy waters of NYC in the 22nd Annual 28.5 mile Manhattan Island Swim. With a beer in one hand and more beer in the other, we salute those swimmers for giving up their Saturday to exercise.

Saturday is also Free Comic Book Day! Really. Not that you need more comic books since the collection you “invested” in is still worthless. Damn! But hey, free Archie is free Archie. Hook yourself up at St. Marks Comics on… St. Marks Place. Or check out the list of stores, nationwide, on Free Comic Book Day’s web site.

MEDIA
Speaking of comic books, we saw Spider-Man 2 and it wasn’t that stupid. Okay, we knew the plot would be the same and the special effects would be great. But we didn’t think it would be good enough to recommend. But it is. Catch it.
