Molé |
Molé in the WallMolé Opens on Allen Street Friday, April 27, 2007 There is a special place in your heart for Mexican food. It’s comforting, a little spicy, and it works wonders on Thursday night hangovers. And, that’s why Molé, opening today on the Lower East Side is your new favorite grub destination. Building on the success of Taco Taco on the Upper East Side, owners Nick and Lupe decided they wanted something little and more refined. And, little Molé is: there are just eight tables and a small bar to the whole place. Not that you won’t enjoy the exposed brick and the happy blue and yellow decor, but be prepared to wait a bit. The food is worth the wait! Yes, there are tacos and burritos but it’s the Chef’s Specials (we scored the menu) that make the visit, well, special. For starters, go with the Crepas con Huitlacoche, corn mushroom crepes with poblano sauce, or Queso Fundido, a cheese fondue with chorizo, mushrooms, or poblano pepper strips. Star entrees include the Barbacoa, three lamb tacos baked in maguey leaves in lamb consommé and the Cochinita Pibil, a traditional Yucatan platter with pork marinated in axiote, wrapped and baked in banana leaves, served with pickled onions, black beans and salsa verde. Drinks and desserts haven’t made it to the menu yet. But Chef Lupe tells us they’re on the way. |
