Exquisite Dining Debuts At Irving Mill
Irving Mill Opens
Monday, October 22, 2007
The timely concept. The perfect location. The pedigreed chef.
Sometimes all the stars line up and - bang! - you have Irving Mill, the brand new restaurant from the owners of (the late) Candela and Chef John Schaefer (Gramercy Park). Located just off the Union Square farmers’ market, Irving Mill will please with its greenmarket-inspired, seasonal American fare, and complementary wine/beer program.
The lessons to be learned:
HISTORY. The restaurant’s name honors author Washington Irving and bakery Irving Mill, which resided near the eatery’s current location. It’s also located off of Irving Place. Interesting.
GASTRONOMY. The art of cooking tastes much better here (view the menu). Indulge in tender Brooklyn Chocolate Stout Braised Beef Short Ribs with Pepper Chutney or a hearty Fettuccine Pasta with Veal Sweetbreads and Black Trumpet Mushrooms. Save room for an excellent Fig & Mascarpone Gratin with Rosemary.
OENOLOGY. Try one of the restaurant’s 180 individually-selected bottles of wine (mostly French, Italian and Spanish). Or settle into the Tap Room (the 25-seat bar in front of the restaurant) and treat yourself to one of the six American microbrews on tap.
Time for recess.
