Inside Sushiya |
Finding NemoSushiya Opens at Whole Foods Bowery Tuesday, April 3, 2007 Some sushi restos try too hard. Waiters in Ninja costumes. Bowls of $20 edamame. And, then there’s Sushiya, the nondescript sushi bar on the second level of the new Whole Foods Bowery. Sushiya adapts the Tokyo-style concept of “robotic sushi,” where small plates of sushi and other edibles travel around the sushi bar on a moving conveyor belt. Plates are color coded according to price, so after you’ve downed a few rounds of hamachi or spicy tempura shrimp maki, the bill equals the sum of your plates. Due to a no tipping policy, all you’ll shell out is that tally plus the tax. The restaurant is a partnership with Genji Express, the sushi subsidiary from the Philadelphia restaurant Genji that’s been supplying most East Coast Whole Foods with their sushi for the past decade. So, expect innovative chef created fare like endive with baby spinach and blueberry nigiri, guacamole gunkan, and an assortment of hot Japanese dumplings. Oh, and if you don’t see your favorite fish, they’ll make it for you, and they they’re open until 11 p.m. daily. Sounds like a recipe for success to us. |
