Paul Smith's Greene Street Shop
London Calling
Paul Smith Opens New York Flagship
Tuesday, December 12, 2006
After your first walk through the new Paul Smith flagship in SoHo, you’ll realize that teNeues may have jumped the gun when publishing the New York edition of their Cool Shops series; Mr. Smith’s new stomping ground is nothing short of remarkable.
From Greene Street, the Neo-Classical façade of the foyer-like first room appears as if this is a shabby chic one room boutique showcasing scarves, playful timepieces, and several other assorted knick-knacks (tea sets, journals, etc.) bearing Paul Smith’s whimsical rainbow signature pattern. What lies beyond is truly a British fashion wonderland, as the expansive boutique sprawls toward Mercer Street like a funhouse, with each vibrantly decorated room more entertaining than the next. Collages of vintage British record albums, portraits, and other memorabilia explode upward against the red and purple walls. So a trip down Swinging London’s memory lane accompanies you while perusing gentlemanly ensembles in the suit atelier, thumbing through pages of addicting coffee table books in the book gallery, or trying on a distinguished floor-length leather shearling coat in front of an antique mirror.
Grasping your wild, new silk tie under Twiggy’s watchful gaze, you kind of get the feeling that Carnaby Street grew up, flushed its perversions down the toilet, and developed Paul Smith’s keen style without losing its sense of humor.
