Neighborhood Barbers |
Razor’s EdgeNeighborhood Barbers Tuesday, February 27, 2007 The more complicated your life gets, the simpler you want things. So, instead of sacrificing a fraction of your rent for a Manhattan salon haircut, get buzzed from one of the masters at Neighborhood Barbers in the East Village. Neighborhood Barbers has been around for nearly three years, but its yesteryear ambiance would have you think otherwise. The barbershop pole outside and faded picture galleries of haircut styles aren’t a homage or formulaic approach disguising a haute men’s salon as a barbershop; this is the real thing! Russian-born, second-generation barber Eric Uvaydov owns the shop, where he expertly shapes the heads of hipsters, neighborhood seniors, and even the likes of John Bartlett, Narciso Rodriguez, and GQ’s Jim Nelson. Eric and his blue-shirted underlings can only tend to three heads at a time, so you’ll have to wait on the faux leather couch to be buzzed, bed headed, or mohawked in the swivel chair. With the occasional help of a water spritzer, Eric and company use a scissors and clippers as part of their dry-cut method. Luxuries like a hot shave and shampoo will run you extra ($8 and $3, respectively), but at only $14 a cut, you’ll welcome the splurge. |
